This section describes in detail how and where to get the certified documents you will need to get married in China.
Note: When having documents certified for the approval of the Chinese government you must follow in direct order from the smallest notary to largest (the dates will be checked). If a document is obtained at a level higher than one notary that is required, you do not have to go 'back' and have the smaller notary certify the document.
Example: Birth certificates are issued by your state government and come with a state seal imprinted on the certificate. After obtaining the birth certificate you do not need to go back to your local government i.e. Clerk of Court, to have them notarize the birth certificate. You may proceed to the next step which would be having the United States Department of State notarize the birth certificate.
If you are unable to carry the documents you want notarized to the agencies listed below, each one offers a mail in service for a fee. You can also hire a company or person to carry the documents to the agencies to have them notarized. Mail service will take anywhere from 5-15 business days and walk-ins (if offered) usually are done the same day. (It is better to go in the morning.)
Tip: Obtain all of the documents you need before taking them to the various agencies to have them notarized. You will save yourself considerable time and some money walking them through as a group than if you did them individually as you obtained them.
There are four levels of Notary in the United States and two levels in China. When getting married in China you will encounter all four on the U.S. side and at least one of the notary levels while in China.
